The story is reminiscent of an occurrence in former Yugoslavia in the late 80s when people protested against the somewhat totalitarian government in the streets for days on end. In support, they were given free bread, pastries and yogurt by the bakers all across the country. And as the police were forced to stand guard and keep the protests as peaceful as can be (much as they privately sided with the people), the protesters in turn "fed" the policemen by passing the bread and pastries to them, recognizing that those men were probably hungry and tired.
I never forgot that story. And this shot just tallies in so well with it.
